It couldn't have happened, not again.
A sea of violet. The haze of darkness in the air. A red void bordered by black that had replaced the very sun itself. Cracked earth where sand had used to be, shattered pieces of cape no longer part of the island that it once was. And the mainland itself torn asunder, as if the corrupted purple foliage were petals of a venomous flower that had come into bloom and ripped the very soul of the island inside-out to reach up to the void itself.
This island had, indeed, become a prison that had been surrounded by water.
Up on the Paopu fruit island, where he had encountered the last user of darkness he had faced before the world had twisted to their liking, Sora stood and watched the ebony tide flood in and make a eerie distorted sound that contradicted the gentle, relaxing ambiance that it once was. His face was hardened, his smile had gone, expressionless. Words could not begin to describe, how the keyblade master felt, upon seeing his world in this state not once, not twice, but more times than he could have never wished to have hoped for. He could not begin to imagine the look on Kairi's face, and Riku's as well since he had been there, when Kairi came back home and discovered what had become of the light of her home.
Sora had failed her.
He had promised her to keep this world safe and filled with light, for when she got back from her journey, and he couldn't even keep up his guard before the light had receeded into the engulfing darkness. Had his light not been bright enough? Not only his, but that of Riku, Namine, and the enigmatic Chaser Terra as well, all who had gathered to defend the peaceful islands they all shared memories from? Sora remembered the first night his home had been washed away into darkness, and all it had taken were the actions of a few individuals like the ones he had fought to open the door, and despite his best efforts the heart of the island had been stolen from them all. He remembered his unknown encounter at the time with whom must have been Xehanort's Heartless, who had given him the warning signs then, but even then nothing would have prepared him for the meaning behind the man's cryptic words which had been repeated when he found him again in the corrupted facsimilie before his demise.
This world has been connected. Tied to the darkness...soon to be completely eclipsed.
Sora felt his fists clench tightly without remembering thinking of the action, his expression now shifting as he narrowed his eyebrows in rising anger. Why did they want this world in darkess, anyway? What possible goal would it achieve to plummet his home into darkness, to keep him here, imprisoned on this island as Riku once was? The sudden reminder of his friend's buried emotions suddenly reminded him of the path they had lead him down, and despite his own darkness in his heart, he paced himself in afterthought by calmly closing his eyes and taking a deep breath. He thought of his friends, and then of Kairi to quell the rage he felt, but as his heart reached out to that of Kairi, suddenly he doubled over in pain as he clutched his chest and heard a voice call out to him from the darkness.
What he saw was a sight which frightened him the most.
A platform, from what he recognized was from the Awakening. But it was not his own. The Princess of Heart of whom was the most important and special to his heart imprinted in the stain glass floor, but opposing her yin to it's yang was the picture of a sinister stranger who's face he could not kiss through the dark shade. The split second of her crossing keyblades with this enigmatic figure, the clash of their keyblades resounding through his heart and his very soul, as if he were there in person witnessing her in mortal danger, and being helpless to do anything to assist her. Then the view of Kairi's eyes opening, not to orbs of oceanic blue, but to those of a glowing neon red.
Sora.
Her voice called out to him like a shattering of stained glass in his own heart, and Sora awoke from the sudden split-second vision to find himself on all fours on the ground, having been struck a critical blow. "Kairi." his heart called out to hers, knowing immediately that was he had seen was somehow real, or real enough for him to know something was terribly wrong. She was in danger, and her connection to him had felt even stronger now that their fates had been intertwined, her fate at extreme risk as much as his own that he felt his heart frantically race and lungs having the wind knocked out of them. It was his heart that hurt the most, as if he had been struck down by the masculine figure clasped in red and black himself. A hand clutching his chest, he dragged himself to his feet, the adrenaline flooding his system telling him to go help her immediately.
But with her in her own Awakening, or that of the enigmatic stranger in black... how could he?
Sora had never fully understood the place he had visited in what seemed like a dream, but... he had a feeling that one could only travel there if they wielded a keyblade if something within his heart called him there, and could only be accompanied by someone who was the other side of their heart. Sora and Roxas had a metaphysical battle there, and when Sora had emerged victorious, he had regained control of his heart over his Nobody counterpart at the time. And from the look on Kairi's face that her eyes were different... the very image of her face that burned with intense pain at the back of his mind like fire... told him that she was not herself and had been lost to the darkness... so her heart could only call out to him and not summon him there.
He had trusted her to look after herself as she had wanted, and now this had happened. Why couldn't he have been there for her when she needed him the most?
The very thought was one of the very worst of his fears and nightmares, and the pain he felt in his heart was unlike any other, unlike any other pain he wished he could have replaced it with to numb him from it.
With Kairi lost to the darkness, the only lead he had was of her antagonist, who eerily wore the same dark body suit Riku once had when possessed by Ansem. Was it another person possessed by Xehanort's Heartless, and where would he even begin to find them? The answer to his question was answered when a lone Shadow Heartless appeared behind him, thinking it had caught a innocent heart off-guard. Contempt returned to his expression, his lips pressed together in a twist of inner rage, and in a flash of light he summoned his Kingdom Key and whirled around to slice it through the Shadow behind him as he stepped forward, all at once in one fluid movement.
Now, he was mad.
But his anger subsided again, the Heartless being a reminder of the reality he was in now. As much as it pained him to do so... he had to hold back from rescuing Kairi at that moment in time. He had little clue on where or how she was from the flash of images he had recieved in his heart, but what he did know was their home was eclipsed in darkness, when he had promised he would restore it's light to Kairi. Even if he had rescued Kairi instead, he would never be able to look her in the eye if he returned her to this shadowful world that should not be in her happy memories of home. Like Mickey had said to him years before during the raid of Hallow Bastion, he had to help others first before helping themselves, because they didn't have a choice whereas he had the freedom to choose.
So he would have a light that Kairi could find her way home to, no matter how she was or how much she had changed... he had to settle things at home, first.
He had to restore their island for his friend Riku as well, and all his friends and people that lived on the islands, as well as the ones he had met outside it. He breathed hard, holding the painful decision within, closing his eyes to contain the overwhelming range of emotions he had just experienced in the past few minutes. He wanted to help so badly, wanted so much for the people he cared for, but they were all being overwhelmed and dragged into the darkness. He had failed to protect her, as well as the island, the most important memories that were everything he had ever cared for... and suddenly, he didn't care about anything anymore. In a sudden explosion of rage, he snapped at a breaking point and yelled out in an outcry of pain as he smashed his keyblade several times against one of the nearby coconut trees, un-bottling all his anger and suffering all at once from having reached his limit.
The eerie sounds of the world were momentarily replaced by the whacking of a keyblade against a solid object, mixed along with muffled sobs of anguish between choked breaths that made it hard to breathe.
Deep scratches had been left behind in the tree, and Sora panted in exhaustion, breathing heavily as he slumped his shoulders and let his keyblade's tip drop to the ground. He wouldn't cry, and he would never give up, not after all the heckling Riku had put him through over the years. He would keep it together, but was glad he had let out his dark emotions, for now he had set his heart right he was going to use his determination and his heart to take back what was rightfully theirs. This island was their home, and no darkness would put out the light that was connected within to his own, and once he had found that connection he was going to reach out to Kairi's and start searching for her in the worlds again.
But one thing at a time, and first thing was first. He had his home he needed to bring back to the light, and keep his promise to her, and to everyone that needed help and was in torment from their suffering.
Eyes of sky blue closed, and his heart reached out through that of the world's darkness, to the light shining within he knew would never go out and needed permission and his help to shine brightly once more.
Now, more than ever. If he never gave up hope... he could not fail.
Kairi... hang in there. I'm with you, and I believe in you.[/color]
