Jecht had already arrived at the arena a bit ahead of schedule. After all, he had to bask in the warm glow of the audience's praises and the swoons of the women. He smiled as he had his arms folded in front of his chest and his back to the opponent's entrance. This was exactly why he wanted in this tournament. He had missed the cheering crowds since he had been taken from Zanarkand. Well, that and to alleviate his boredom. He had heard about the tournament and heard that a lot of tough opponents were going to show up. An opportunity that Jecht couldn't really pass up. As always, Jecht had the upmost confidence that he'd win this tournament. After all, he was the best. The Blitzball Ace turned his head when he heard footsteps behind him. That had to have been his opponent. Jecht immediately sized his opponent. Clothes were normal, if definitely not Spiran design. Jecht almost didn't get why the guy had shoulder pads until he saw the giant sword that rivaled his own. Jecht also saw that the guy had really spiky black hair. Kids these days. Jecht rolled his shoulders. "Zack, right? You're late!" Jecht turned and grabbed his sword, easily heaving it out of the ground he had embedded it in. "You should be grateful! Not many people get to fight The Great Jecht! This oughtta be fun!" Jecht gleefully smiled as his spikes appeared on his shoulder and leg. "Hope you don't break your arms swinging that thing around."-------- Because, why not?

The Ex-Soldier breathed in the atmosphere. It had been years ago, but the thrill of being in the arena again had never been matched, not even by the Gold Saucer's battle square. The sun was still just as bright, the pillars were still as inspiring, if not somewhat smaller, and the crowd....the fight might change, the fighters different, but the crowd, the crowd only gets bigger.
As he walked, it was like he was in his own memories, but eventually the illusion was broken by a man's voice. It was a gruff voice, aged, and cocky. A man stood before him, one that looked like he was probably as old as Zack's own father, maybe older, but that's about where the similarities ended. He carried himself in such a way that made Zack think the man didn't have much doubt in himself, and the way he sunk his blade into the ground showed he didn't have too much respect for his own weapon, he could only assume that would spill over into the fight and show how the man would feel about his opponent.
Zack took his own weapon in hand, and held it up straight before him, blocking his face from Jecht for a moment and despite what was obviously a risk, closed his eyes briefly and mentally recited a line that had been with him since the day he took the blade from his former mentor. 'Protect your honor, always.' As he drew the sword away, his blue eyes settled on the tattooed man who had pulled his blade from the coarse ground of the arena floor and the ex-SOLDIER took his combat ready stance.
"Since this'll be the only round you're in, let's make it good for the crowd." The younger swordsman retorted, and grinned. He launched himself forward, cutting the distance between the two of them in seconds, showing that the blade's unique balance and alloy made it easy for him to carry, while still allowing powerful swings of the blade. He brought the massive blade down in a powerful strike towards where Jecht had made his stand, and it wasn't an overly flashy attack, but did indeed have a great deal of force behind it. Zack was just probing his opponent's abilities, if only briefly, before preparing to go all out.
He didn't need to kill the old man, just beat him. And if he could help it, he didn't want to expose his techniques too early in the tournament.

Jecht had just managed to block the sword coming down at his head like a falling skyscraper. While the kid needed two hands to wield the sword, Jecht merely needed the one. "HA! A competitor! This is gonna be a good fight!" Jecht exclaimed as the swords clashed. He then jumped back, letting gravity take hold of Zack's sword, before he suddenly rushed right up to Zack, showing him that his opponent could keep up, despite his age. Jecht then reared back and aimed a headbutt right into Zack's face. In fact, Jecht unleashed four headbutts, followed by sword swings, punches and kicks, his fiery aura adding to the power of the Brutal Brawler. He ended the combo with one powerful sword swing and yelled, "Don't cry now!" before swinging it.
"You fight a lot like this blonde guy I know. Used the same sword, too and his hair was just as ridiculous." Jecht then chuckled and rubbed the back of his neck as he waited for Zack's next move, which was sure to be about as good as Jecht had given. Jecht couldn't wait. It had been awhile since he had fought someone or something that was a challenge. He charged energy into his free hand, waiting for Zack's charge.

When Jecht maneuvered out of the way of the force of the Bustersword, Zack's stance stayed steady. The weapon's size often mislead people to think that he had no control over the weapon once he swung it, and folks couldn't possibly be more wrong. Zack had been able to use the greatsword with ease and speed that rivaled many of the opponents who used much smaller weapons, Genesis coming quickly to mind, but this man was as far from Genesis as he was from Steiner.
The old man had spring in it's step, that's for sure. He had a good balance of strength and speed, as well as an air of unpredictability, and that air came to a point when Zack was greeted with the old man's forehead butting him square in the brow. The blow shook the ex-SOLDIER and he saw a sharp flash of white, stumbling back a step. Each strike of the man's rock like head caused another sharp white flash, but by the time the fourth blow struck, the raven haired swordsman had regained his footing and prepared himself for the next blow.
Rather than another butt of the head, Zack's opponent rushed in for a melee flurry. Zack's closed quarter's training came into effect, mostly by reflex, and he began to read the older man's brawler like strikes as they came in. Deflecting what strikes he could with one hand, while the other began to, surprisingly enough, battle off the man's sword with his own. The swordstyle wasn't his usual offensive version, but instead he spun the sword adeptly with one hand, striking the blade away as if it were clashing against a buzz-saw, and even working to parry with the metal handle. With the somewhat unusual defensive style coming into play, Zack wasn't able to watch out for the man's kicks, and felt a blow rush into his midsection, once more causing him to lose a foot of ground.
As the finishing touch of Jecht's combo came, it was all Zack could do to bring the Bustersword up and catch the strike with the flat of his sword, it's massive size allowing it to double as a shield in that instance. The old man began to spout something about a person Zack could only assume to be Cloud, and the hair on the back of his neck began to prick. He was starting to get sick of people acting like he was the one imitating the blonde.
As the momentum changed, so did the air, and Zack peered over the edge of his sword. Jecht was waiting, and the way he held himself meant that he was preparing an attack once Zack had rushed forward with his own, so there was only one thing to do, give the man what he wanted.
Tilting his blade, the bright sun of the open, arid arena glinted momentarily off of it's edge, a flash towards Jecht's eyes, and Zack flung his blade high into the air. As it rose, Zack's hands took on a sharp glow, and he rushed forward. His fists began to dart like bullets being fired from his shoulders as he lashed out at the older swordsman with a powerful combination, bringing a mix of punches, kicks, knees and elbow strikes towards his opponent. His first few strikes were aimed at taking Jecht off balance, moving to strike at his sides, and legs, to force him to back up, and then once Zack had the momentum, he went in for damaging, disabling strikes, aiming for the limbs and joints of his opponent.
As Zack's blade lost it's rise, and began to fall back towards them, the Ex-Soldier moved in with his knee and elbow strikes, now seeking to simply punish his opponent with straight attacks towards his midsection, collar and even head before, with one hand raised, Zack caught his sword and whirled around to swing with a backhanded strike from the butt of the weapon towards Jecht's jaw.
"Ever see that 'blonde kid' do that?"
((Rush Assault: A unique limit break in Zack's arsenal, it engages through memories of his once and former mentor Angeal. In honor of Angeal, Zack sheaths his blade and engages the enemy in hand to hand combat. Highlighted in a radiant golden glow, Zack dashes towards the target and unloads a high speed volley of punches, and kicks (and if there are two or more targets, he darts between them at high speeds with his blows) before breaking off and, focusing the golden aura into his fists, launches a final attack where he collides with the target in a blinding explosion. This attack is blunt and uses energy, making it less effective against targets with heavy armor or defensive attributes like spikes or flames. (Cooldown: Two Posts.)))

Jecht smiled. That comment he had made earlier seemed to hit a nerve with his opponent. He was actually surprised since he had no intention to hit a nerve with that particular comment. Must've been some history between the two. Ah well, now wasn't the time to speculate. Especially since this kid was charging at him, fists a-blazing, apparently ditching the sword for now. Jecht braced himself for the upcoming combo.
What Jecht hadn't expected was how strong this kid was. Granted, none of the hits disabled or crippled him. He WAS the Final Aeon and the Armor of Yu Yevon, after all. That didn't stop the blows from being very painful. He blocked most of the blows, but was nearly dazed as a super-powered fist collided with Jecht's face and a kick to his stomach knocked the wind out of him. Then Jecht realized that Zack hadn't ditched the sword completely, when the blunt part collided with his jaw. Jecht smirked, despite the pain. He liked this kid. Definitely the kind of guy who'd put up a fight no matter what the odds were.
"Gotta admit, Blondie always hid behind his sword." Jecht commented, wiping his mouth. "Unfortunately, that comment's the only thing I'm gonna concede, kid." Jecht then showed his hand, which was ablaze with energy. He then shoved his palm at Zack's chest and rocketed at him, unleashing Triumphant Grasp and pushing as his energized hand caused several explosions in quick succession. Then Jecht tried to grab Zack's shirt as the last of the energy created a bigger explosion, enough to propel lesser beings over the horizon or smack into a wall.

This was the move Zack had been waiting for. He had expected the old man to have an ace up his sleeve, or what looked more like an explosion in his palm, and the ex-SOLDIER wasn't disappointed, unfortunately. As the palm thrust itself into Zack's chest, he cursed himself for leaving such an amateur opening, and suddenly felt his feet leaving the ground, finding himself, moments later, airborne and his chest in pain. It had felt like he'd been punched in the chest by a battering ram....that was on fire.
But even as he rose high into the air, his grip on his blade never wavered. If there was one thing that had been pounded into his mind, it was that a weapon was only as good as the man that wielded it, and he wasn't about to let the legacy of the Bustersword be tarnished. As his momentum reached it's peak and gravity began to take over, for a split second he could see the face of every spectator in the audience, every pair of eyes in the place locked on him, waiting to see if he would crash to the ground, or manage to land on his feet. A small smile managed to inch it's way to the corner of his mouth even as the throbbing pain of the attack to his chest began to turn into a low burning sensation throughout all of his limbs.
Twisting his body in the air, the ex-SOLDIER swung his weapon, as if swatting at an invisible airborne enemy, but rather than the weapon swinging harmlessly through the air, it served to begin a hailstorm of molten rock towards the older swordsman. As the comets rained down towards Jecht, a total of 16 in number, some aimed directly at him, others smashing into the ground around him, sending chunks of stone spattering in all directions, smoke and fire dancing around the two fighters in violent harmony, Zack hit the ground running.
With his blade clasped tightly in two hands, and as the final meteor came falling to the ground, the Swordsman struck the flaming stone with the flat of his blade, like a power hitter swinging for the fences, and added his own strength into the meteor's power, sending it screaming towards Jecht. If Jecht would block the attack or dodge, or even lash out at it, he would immediately be greeted with the Bustersword lashing out towards him through the trailing ashes and hazy heat filled air that followed it.
(Meteor Shots: This ability is triggered by memories of his camaraderie with Cloud. Zack launches himself into the air, and with his weapon, directs a shower of 16 high impact meteors to pummel his target. Each one exploding with violent force and a high temperature, the attach deals both physical and fire based damage on either a single target, or multiple enemies. The more enemies it hits, the more the damage is spread out among them. (Cooldown: 4 posts.))

After completing Triumphant Grasp, Jecht landed on the ground just in time to see Zack recover and prepare a move of his own. And it was a doozy of one. "Oh boy..." was the only thing the Brutal Blitzer had time to say before the meteors plummeted to the ground, some of them aimed at him, while others were clearly only fired the way they were fired to hit anyone dodging out of the way. Jecht growled. This kid was good. Jecht started dodging and running around, batting away the meteors he could bat away and just dodging the ones he couldn't. He was doing a good job, too, but it couldn't last. There were simply too many and Jecht was hit by one that was aimed at him and another that wasn't. The second was luckily only collateral damage, but Jecht was still hurting from the attack.
But Jecht wasn't going to give up so easily. He was the Best, simple as that. This kid was just going to have to learn that the hard way. He saw Zack land on the ground behind another meteor and, since the meteor suddenly changed direction and was rocketing towards him at an insane speed, Jecht deduced that Zack was ramming the damn thing into him. Jecht wasn't going to have any of that nonsense. He roared and swung his sword at the meteor, slicing it in half vertically. He then changed to a reversed grip on his sword and blocked Zack's Buster Sword. Sparks flew as the blades clashed. Jecht smiled again.
"Nice rock collection, kid. Guess it's my turn to show off mine, eh?" Jecht quipped as he sidestepped around Zack, keeping close to him and crouched down, embedding his sword in the ground for now. A meteor was then summoned, a rather large one at that, and it careened towards Jecht and his too close for comfort opponent. Jecht then caught the meteor and suddenly leapt up into the air with it, spiraling as he did so to catch Zack in a combo with the caught meteor. Then he aimed towards and Zack and tossed the massive rock at him. Jecht then landed and grabbed his sword and charged energy into it.

This was it. This was do or die, and Zack was only in the first round. He'd never heard of this man before, and he wasn't expecting to see a lot of familiar faces in this tournament, but if any of them were on par with Jecht, he realized he couldn't pull his punches anymore. That vow he recited at the beginning of the match would mean as much here as it would anywhere else, and as Zack saw his opponent fire into the air, it didn't take a tactical genius to figure out what was coming next.
But as Zack looked upwards, the massive stone coming down on him like a true meteor, for some reason there was a relief in pressure at the back of his mind, something he didn't even realize was there until it was gone, and images flooded in a split second, information and thoughts suddenly emerging from the corner of his mind. These things were not new to him, he didn't have to take a moment to sort out his thoughts, but it was more like a memory had just come back to him, and that massive flaming sphere roaring down towards him was the trigger. There had been a situation like this in the past, but one that was much more important, a massive meteor had been aimed at the planet, and there hadn't seemed to be any way to stop it, but Zack knew somehow he had helped do it, and while he wasn't sure if his efforts had made any great difference, he knew that he had helped.
This, what Jecht was doing, wasn't the same, but somehow, Zack knew that if he was able to help overcome the great calamity in his past, this wasn't going to stand in his way either. The sand and chipped stone around his feet began to chatter and skip away from him in waves, as if waves of invisible energy began to ripple from him, and his sword, which he clasped with both hands, began to shift in color and hue. In what seemed like an instant, the blade had gone from it's crisp mix of dark grey and steel silver to a sharp, glowing red. The heat radiating off of the weapon was visible, but the ex-SOLDIER showed not a single drop of sweat.
As he watched the great stone coming down towards him, it became silhouetted by his memory of that great calamity, of Meteor. The name range clear in his mind, and carried with it something else....something familiar, something....Zack's muscles coiled and sprang, and the swordsman was airborne. He rushed towards the great stone head first, blade ready, and without fear, just like it's wielder. In mid air the weapon met Jecht's attack, and the blade's edge crashed against flaming stone. It bit, and it bit hard, like a power saw meeting stone, and that heat that coated Zack's blade began to cause sparks to fly, as if the weapon was vibrating.
Almost visible to the crowd, the downward fall of the meteor and the upward rise of Zack's momentum clashed and stood still, canceling each other out, the two hovering for what seemed like a moment frozen in time, but then....
The stone began to melt.
The heat from Zack's blade began to build up, and slowly rose through the meteor, but by then Zack's momentum began to fade and the meteor began to fall of Gravity's accord, taking the ex-SOLDIER with it. But before landing, the Bustersword had managed to pierce the opposite side of the Meteor, and sliced it into two perfect halves. As the great stone split in two, with Zack landing in the middle, spatters of molten lava licked at his skin and clothes, dripping from the blade like the blood of a beast. With his breath high and heavy in his chest, Zack took his position, blade ready for another round with the older man who, despite his utter lack of respect for his own weapon, had earned a level of respect from him.
((High Braver: Zack's Bustersword takes on a red hue, specifically along the bladed edge which is nearly white hot, and flies towards the target. With the tip of the blade nearly touching the ground, Zack slices in an 'uppercut' and launches his opponent into the air. Then, with a powerful leap, he flies past them, and swings the blade in an overhead chop, slashing the target and sending them crashing back towards the ground below. Can be used in combination with Chain Slash mid-air, but only if Chain Slash is not on CD. Immediately starts CD for both attacks if combo'd. (Cooldown: Two Posts))

"Heh, we put on a nice show, didn't we?" Jecht quipped. Judging from the sounds of the audience, which hadn't died down since the start of the match and, instead seemed to have risen steadily throughout it. Jecht smirked, knowing this match couldn't last much longer. So, might as well go out with a bang. Ah well. Even if he lost, Jecht had some good fun. But he didn't plan on losing and he wasn't going to roll over that easily.
Jecht dashed at Zack and unleashed Jecht Blade on him, slashing at him with his energized sword in a massive combo, before yelling "One more!" and unleashing the energy in one final slice. But Jecht wasn't finished with him yet. Jecht then kept on dashing at Zack and continued his unrelenting assault, keeping up the slashes, punches, kicks and yes, even headbutts to keep Zack on the defensive in one final combo.
Jecht smirked during the combo and said, "Nice of you to give this old man some exercise! Hope we can do this again some time!" He then laughed as he finished the combo, sure that Zack wouldn't take long to unleash a retaliation of some sort.

The moment of clairvoyance for the ex-SOLDIER quickly washed away as the brash older swordsman took to the offensive, and if Zack had been any less trained, he wouldn't have had the reaction time to save himself from a fatal first strikes. As the two blades clashed, sparks burst from their weapons like the two men were wielding fireworks rather than weapons, and the two seemed to be on par for their blows, but the fatigue of stopping a meteor from crashing down on his head had taken it's toll on Zack, and a strike made it's way through, cutting him across the forearm.
With the sudden sharp pain drawing Zack's attention for a moment, he was met by another butt to the forehead, a move that was beginning to annoy Zack more than the man's swordplay. The man was half swordsman half brawler, a type of fighting style that Zack had honestly never encountered very often. The closest thing to this was Angeal's fighting style, but Angeal fought with his fists more to the point of preserving his weapon. This man, he just seemed to like to hit things.
As he yelled 'ONE MORE!' and lunged forward, Zack did something unexpected, even to himself. As the blade came down, so did Zack's, and as he parried the strike, he, with a bit of disappointment at himself, sunk his blade into the ground. He thrust the weapon down to bite into the hook like protrusion of Jecht's sword, and lock both their weapons into the earth, if only momentarily. During that instance, he kept a tight grip of his blade, and launched himself forward with an act of aerobatics that surprised even the ex-SOLDIER. In what could only be described as an airborn cartwheel, Zack, with one hand still tight on his weapon, threw his lower body towards Jecht, and brought his boot to chin level.
It wasn't flashy, and Zack knew that this fight wasn't to the death. If this worked, he'd hopefully be able to knock Jecht out without having to show too many more of his surprises he had in store for the next round of fighters.
