There is certain abhorrence to living in the brightest of light.
Underneath that harsh glare, all that pomp and circumstance, there’s a hideous need to toe the line, to keep appearances, to always be the best a person can be. Worlds he had observed from afar were rendered stillborn, their development halted as their worlds choked by apathy and torpor. Why they chose to cloak themselves in light so blinding that they lose sight of everything else is baffling. In a perfect world, light would not dominate and choke the life out of worlds, leave them barren of progress and wealth beyond what they could scrape from their stifling mediocrity. Light scorches all it touches, much like how darkness poisons. Reconciling the two was a never ending battle.
It was the only life Gabranth knew.
In a role meant to dole out justice to those who spurn it, Gabranth could rest easy knowing that he was meting out a small dose of righteousness to ease his troubled conscience. Every blow of his sword was a bow of justice, every stricken insurgent another interloper who would halt history’s march with their lack of vision. It mattered not whether they are scum or innocents, only that their deaths contributed to the greater cause of the Empire. They were sacrifices worth delivering and Gabranth could soothe the black river coursing through his soul with these encouraging thoughts of light. Light begets darkness; they are intertwined forever no matter how hard each of their pawns fight to break free. He knew that from example.
This world was peaceful for now. Gabranth ignored the lands of shadow where threatening witches and black thorns reign and instead headed for the epicenter of overpowering light. He could feel in his bones the short-lived grasp of fire and shadow and could see underneath his helm its veins grapple the castle’s walls, never letting go until abrasive light blasted its way through. He did not feel the need to enter. He was content to gauge the apparent worthiness of this world from the causeway leading towards it.
After all, was he not a Judge?
His armor was black of soot and sin that much he knew. In his hand, his tools of war shone with cold indifference. It did not matter to it whether its wielder fought for salvation or damnation. It would cut and tear and destroy any other way. Gabranth felt much the same way. Light has shunned him, the darkness embraced is hatred for the world, therefore it was discord that he will sunder to the worlds. The forces of light think to swamp the worlds with their scorching sun. Yet the brightest light always conjures the deepest shadows.
“Who dares hope for a peaceful world?”
He raised his blade of chaos and felt the ambient Mist Charge into his blood.
“A false promise.”

It was just another beautiful day on another random world.
He wasn’t sure why he had ended up on this seemingly peaceful world, but what he was sure of was that he might finally have a chance to rest his weary eyes. He could see the shimmering light off in the distance that told him a domestic home of royalty might lie there. Well, it wasn’t so much the light as the long tower he could see in the horizon. Maybe, just maybe, they would have a spare room he could use to rest his weary soul.
However, there was always a however when it came to the possibility of a night off in the midst of war. Light and Darkness was a struggle Sabin was all too determined to see end. Sabin caught sight of an armored warrior making his way towards the same castle that was held in his own sights. Something seemed off about this man, like he was determined to accomplish a task at the very keep ahead. Sure, he should never judge a book by its cover, but this book had a subtle air of malice that he couldn’t quite put his finger on. It could have been just his dense armor giving the former heir of Figaro the freaky vibe, so he decided it was best to follow him at first, keeping his distance the entire time.
He followed the armored man all the way to a long bridge connecting the roadways with a brilliant castle that radiated a light he couldn’t help but cherish. The only downside was that it brought memories of the struggle he last had before his disappearance from the World of Ruin. He kept his head held high in hopes that he would see both his brother and his castle once more.
The oddity of his current situation was quite intriguing. The judge before him never actually entered the magnificent keep in front of them. In fact, he just kept his eyes fixed of the source of Light, as if he were waiting for something. The bear had enough of spying on the armored soldier, he decided it was best, after all, to confront the warrior and answer the question that had been plaguing his mind.
”You know, if you knock, they might open the door.”[/b]
His approach was filled with angst as he prepared the playbook in his mind for a possible, inevitable conflict. While the thought didn’t make much sense in his mind, he knew that he had just opened the door for the armored soldier to turn and attack him, so he needed distance to come up with an intelligent counter if the Judge was to strike at him. He had the full knowledge of Duncan’s teachings at his disposal, and he would use it if necessary.
With Godhand clinched around his fist the question looming in his mind prepared for an answer. Friend or Foe?

He expected an army to open this castle’s doors. He expected a cohort or armor and steel to bar his way and defend their home. Any moment, they would find the figure clad in cold iron, baring weapons of destruction, bent on delivering darkness and death to their castle of light. Even one lone figure was enough to create havoc in a worldwide scale though Gabranth was not arrogant enough to think him worthy of an army. Judge Magister he may be. But surely those who loved their home would come to engage the enemy? Or are they too complacent, too cowardly to face a soldier, too content of staying behind their comfortable walls?
But no. It seems his opponent was to be an interloper.
Gabranth turned towards the giant bear of a man who had queried him. He looked like he can take care of himself in combat but the judge still did not like that this world has to rely on outsiders o defend itself from war. Base cowardice was a grave and hideous defect of humanity and Gabranth misliked seeing examples of it anywhere.
“My intent was never to knock.”
Who was this world to rely on strangers to continue basking in is false light? Where they too content with peace that they run away from war when it whiffs its ugly head? He knew the lows humanity can sink into, how the sol can be ensnared and corrupted to heights unknown. The darkness may corrode but the light was more hypocritical. It hid the flaws of the world in its basking glow, never letting people confront their defects but instead glory in their heights. They knew nothing but what they believe to be the best in them, never seeing the worst they had to offer.
It did not matter to Gabranth who his mysterious brawler was. He was to be made as an example for this tepid, lifeless land.
One more Mist Charge and Gabranth felt a familiar power coursing through his very bones. Chaos Blade and Highway Star came apart, ready to draw blood from anyone foolhardy enough to stand in his way. “My purpose is far more than that.”

My intent was never to knock
The mysterious armored man turned towards Sabin, and the bear immediately felt uneasy about his presence. He could sense something in the direction of malice from him, but he still couldn’t be sure. The armor definitely put him in the mind of a militaristic dictator, such as Gestahl from him own world. Was this man similar to the Emperor who betrayed the World of Ruin?
”Doorbell then?”[/b]
Sabin couldn’t help but let out a hearty laugh at his own probably poor attempt at a joke. He figured that if he lightened the mood, then, perhaps, he could also lighten the atmosphere of his situation. That situation happened to be the mysterious allegiance of the knight in front of him.
My purpose is far greater than that.
Damn! It seems all hope was lost. Someone fighting for the side of light would not have spoken in an extreme such as the Judge. Sabin knew that he had to stop him, because, in all likelihood, he was here to conquer to beautiful castle in front of them. Sabin was going to have to play the defender of this castle. It seemed like he was the only capable fighter on this world capable of such a task.
"Then my purpose is to defeat you!"[/b]
The Magicite in Sabin’s pocket gave a quick faint pale glow before the castle itself became magically inclined to help the Returner in his plight. The shadow of the castle extended the entire length across the bridge, as if the Sun was right behind it at the end of the day. While that seemed to be a parlor trick, the next part of his Vanish spell certainly wasn’t. The moment the shadow reached the farthest point of the bridge, Sabin vanished in plain daylight. His figure had become magically camouflaged by the overcast of the keep at the end of the bridge.
Now, it was time for Sabin’s opening attack. He took the stance familiar by any student of Duncan’s; he took the stance of the Blitz technique. Four crimson red doppelgangers of the former Figaro heir appeared in the exact same stance as Sabin. Each one able to think and move itself, but each one was also a living, breathing land-mine. Simultaneously, they bounded for the armored knight, each one taking its own route. The middle two approached from the left and right, respectively, attempting to surround their enemy on land. The outside two did the same but in the air in a massive leap towards the Judge. Such was the power of Rising Pheonix. They would all disappear if they missed their target, but if they hit, they would detonate upon impact.
If this foe really believed that he was beyond the people of this castle, then he would need to be brought down to reality. The only person beyond the people was nobody. Why should any one individual declare himself as such? The only one who knew the answer to that question was Sabin’s opponent.

He had foreseen much more than this sorry spectacle.
The castle behind him was a glorious edifice, a towering statue of rock and mortar, piercing the sky with its lofty magnitude. It dominated this tawdry, empty world as its lord and master. Surely the man who lifted it to the sky, the king who ruled by right of power, surely whoever that person was, he would lead the charge to defend his home? By any rights, any man would be brave and willing to defend their home, let alone their castle. No man should cower behind walls and doors when their very home was at siege.
But it seems Gabranth is to be disappointed today. He had brought no armies, no batteries, no siege machines, no drums nor flags beyond the one on his back. All that he brought with him was his tools and his guts. He was willing to take on armies, contingents of knights, any warrior willing to lay down their lives for their home. To find no one willing to come and engage him, instead relying on a burly boisterous buffoon of a bear man to defend its land, it as reprehensible to find such a stagnant and lazy world. Every man was accountable for his home.
It was an anathema to Gabranth.
The man looked like he could punch boulders into dust but instead he chose to hide. Covered by the castle’s shadow, his bulk shimmered into nothing. Gabranth would call him a coward but he can appreciate tactical move every now and then. He instead brought his swords together and let the Mist Charge around him once more. The worlds were always thick with Mist, even if their natives give it other names. It was almost comforting that certain rules were the same for each world.
His opponent finally struck and it was an attack Gabranth failed to anticipate. Four doppelgangers of the bear man appeared from nowhere, two in the sky and two on the ground, their fists all aimed at the armored Judge. The attack moved with such speed that all he could do was take a step back before the two on the air collided with Highway Star and exploding on impact. Gabranth was thrown backwards and slammed on the ground, his armor singed but intact. He felt his bones ringing from the shock but the Mist overflowing through his veins was more than enough to cushion the blow.
“Is that all?”
Gabranth decided to throw away all pretenses and brought his swords together. The Mist covered their blades and crystallized into potent, powerful force. Gabranth let the swords sing in the air as he threw blades of power to the remaining two clones, cleaving their Innocence apart.

The battle for Enchanted Dominion had officially begun. Sabin had moved the first piece in the physical game of chess between himself and the armored man in front of him. The powerful doppelgangers he had just sent the Judge’s way only proved partly successful. The airborne duo collided with Gabranth’s weapon, yet he still felt the Blitz’s impact. The two that approached from the ground, however, were met with their unfortunate demise due to a powerful technique that slashed them both directly in half.
”That could have been worse.”[/b]
He still hadn’t seen much from the knight’s arsenal yet, and he didn’t want to get too close without having such information. As his Vanish spell faded, the shadows of the castle retreated to show that Sabin hadn’t even budged an inch. The bear had been watching his opponent, trying to discover how he fought. It was something Duncan had taught him from the beginning. If he learned how his opponent went about combat; he would also learn how his opponent would leave himself open. So far, he’d learned that if he attacked from multiple fronts, the armored man wouldn’t be able to completely defend it, but he wouldn’t leave himself completely vulnerable either.
That didn’t leave him with many choices. Sabin would either stay long range with the few Blitz’s he had that could reach the armored man, or he’d suck it up and take the fight to the knight. Personally, even though it wasn’t logically sound, he preferred the second choice. He knew his physical prowess could lead him through his opponent, but a little magic to improve his chances would be amazing right now. The Magicite in his pocket gave off a faint blue glow before he felt his heart’s pace quicken. Then, one by one, all of his muscles tensed up, and the former heir of Figaro felt like he could run five miles in under a minute, even though that was an impossible feat.
When Sabin did move, it was almost as if he was a blur to all those who caught sight of him. It was the power of Hastega[/color] at its finest. Each time he changed directions, an immobile doppelganger stood where he once did, merely staring at his opponent. Before he finally reached the Judge’s side, there was a grand total of five mirages standing before his opponent, acting as a prelude to what the knight would be facing.
Once he got in range, he actually did not immediately strike towards his opponent. Instead, Duncan’s apprentice began to circle his opponent leaving several, much more violent, clones following him. Once he made a complete circle around his opponent, they all began a hail of hooks and jabs, uppercuts and haymakers. For nearly thirty seconds, the five clones and Sabin threw everything they had at Gabranth. When the clones started fading, Phantom Rush[/b] was complete. Sabin hopped backwards, still feeling the effects of his Hastega

Gabranth was home.
The song of swords in the air, the charged fury of the atmosphere, the frenzied pace of fighter against fighter, the gamble of lives thrown in the air, it was what he was bred for. Peace, Landis, all that was a fallacious memory now to him, a bygone blur of an era that he could no longer conceive existing. Why search for a peace that is temporary in the face of a never-ending conflict? All of his pontificating cannot hide the fact that Gabranth only truly belongs in the endless, scarred battlefield. He only comes alive with Chaos in hand, bearing down on his foe with justice on his side.
He was getting tired of his foes shenanigans. Preferring to hide behind a whirlwind of clones and fists was all well and good but that only meant to the Judge that he was afraid of getting into the thick of the fight, scared to see what failure will bring. A pity he could not be bothered to put in an actual fight but one must learn how to use the tools they wield to wage war effectively. He cannot fault his opponent for unsubtly raining blows and punches at the armor-clad Judge, hoping that one or all would disable him. As it stands, Gabranth would find it a terrible way to lose to such a buffoon.
Very well Let overwhelming force meet overwhelming force and better come out triumphant. The Judge would prove this hound had a fiercer bite than he looked.
For all his display of skill and prowess, Gabranth’s opponent was incredibly obvious in his intent, running and flailing as if his foe would be intimidated by such a display. Instead, Gabranth was content with watching as his foe laid out his plan of attack for all to see. Was he not tired of phantom clones? They were as weak as paper and easily foiled but it seems his opponent was content with sticking to one strategy and hoping it works. A shame then but he should learn never to expect much in tactical acumen from his enemies.
A hail of fists and fury he might withstand but Gabranth was not wont to risk trying out uncertainties in the face of battle. He brought Chaos Blade and Highway Star together, blocking the first initial blows before gathering the Mist to their blades and blasting them forth, casting Aero and blasting and unholy whirlwind unto his foe. The blowing wind was just a cover as the Mist gathered in Gabranth’s hands. His swords began spinning around him as Gabranth let loose a jet of powerful black energy through the whirlwind. He did not intent to prolong this farce any longer. Even if he had to drag his foe to a Fulminating Oblivion.
"Give up? How absurd. We've only just begun."

So Sabin wasn’t nearly as successful with his Blitz as he’d intended. He’d planned to beat the Judge to a pulp and force him into submission; instead, his first few shots were blocked by his opponent’s swords. The rest of his shots were blocked with a barrier of wind that sent the powerful bear flying sky high. Sabin felt his body being forced from the ground as the vortex forced him to fight in the air.
Why couldn’t the battles just get easier instead of harder? At least the knight wasn’t a crazed clown bent on becoming a god.
He did see through the ploy, barely. He just happened to flip in just the right direction to set an eye on the gathering of strange energies into the hands of the Judge Magister. He then saw the Fulminating Oblivion soar his way in a fashion that he actually found familiar.
One of Duncan’s last lessons to Sabin, before Vargas apparently killed his father and master, was the powerful Aura Cannon. He remembered the long days he spent trying to focus his body’s energies into an external weapon. Until that point, every technique he had to learn was merely manipulating his energy into powering certain parts of his body, usually his massive fists. It took him a full week to discover how to perform such a manipulation of energy. A week later, and he was able to turn the weapon into a cannon of raw energy.
Sabin felt the cool relief of chakra moving from his feet, through his chest, before it finally found a home in his hands. There he focused the energy into a single point, two inches from his palms, behind his body. The massive beam opposing him was soon met by the powerful torrent of energy released from Figaro’s palms in what appeared to be a plume of pure white flame.
If this guy was as strong as he let on, then Sabin might actually need help taking him out. Luckily, he’d found another piece of Magicite on the beaches of that weird island he’d fought the idiotic gunman and a man with a thing for white clothing. This Esper was leagues above the Cactuar he’d been carrying around, and much more vicious than the cactus as well. A faint red glow went off as Sabin landed and placed his palm around the crystal.
”Your loss then…”[/b]
It only took a split second; you’d miss it if you blinked. Instantly, something[/b] eclipsed the sun and gave off a faded red glow. He never knew exactly how Diablos came to the area when summoned, but whether it was an extreme speed or teleportation, he now appeared between Gabranth and Sabin. He quickly unwrapped his wings from his body displaying himself in full dominance to the Judge Magister. A flex of his wrist later, and a powerful, violet sphere appeared where Sabin had just seen the armored foe only a split second earlier. This sphere was an intense gravity strong enough to crush even diamonds. After about thirty seconds, everything was back to the way it was in the same amount of time it took for it all to start.
Nobody would topple the former Prince of Figaro, not even a Judge Magister.

[OOC: Yeah, this was pathetic. Sorry!] In his mind, divorced from the chaos of battle, Gabranth felt at peace.
It did not matter that his foe was a bruiser hiding his moves through a barrage of fists and fury, a laughing buffoon confident in ways the Judge’s wrath could not duplicate. It did not matter that he was adrift in the oceans of the worlds without a cause for his swords to defend, that the country whose flag he bore on his back has left him for more peaceful shores, his young lord off to better pastures. It did not matter that this was the only worth that the broken war hound can find for himself.
When those swords connect against steel and flesh, Gabranth was alright in the world.
Until his opponent took out a crystal from his pocket. Until a shrill cry to the skies heralded the appearance of a winged devil, power simmering from its pores. Suddenly Gabranth felt the earth, the sky, the cold, blood-stained steel, everything just drop. His bones shook, his flesh crumbled but Gabranth was above pain. He was above such trivial matters as a puppet’s fury burned through his soul.
You dared?
The gravity receded back to normal and Gabranth felt his breath come back. His senses reorganized, his body still burning in Mist’s fire. The brawler might have thought to have finished him off with that farce but the Judge would not be broken with pretty crystals.
“You dare use a trinket of the gods?”
Gabranth rushed towards the bear-beast fool, throwing away all pretenses to the wind. To hell allegiance! Chaos Blade and Highway Star came forth, the Judge throwing himself into a Relentless Lunge, all vows of justice forgotten in his rage.

[Urgh, sorry, horrid post, but I can hardly hold my eyes open any longer and I don't want this fight to end with a DQ.]
You dare use a trinket of the gods?
Yes, he definitely dared. Sabin knew he was a physical powerhouse, but there was something about this armored warrior that made him think that his opponent was a lot more powerful than he was letting on. The bear had to use whatever means necessary to save this world from the Judge. So, yes, he would use Magicite to defeat his enemy if his enemy wished to rule unjustly over the people. Sabin had fought tyranny in his own world, and he didn’t want anyone else.
”Yeah, I’ll do it since you want to take freedom from these people.”[/b]
He then was forced with close range combat after all, and Sabin was oddly delighted by this. Close range was his forte, and Gabranth had yet to learn that. He lunged forward and Sabin rolled to the left to dodge, but the second and third lunges managed to hit directly at home. He felt the stings that would surely turn into a nasty stain of blues and blacks in a day’s time. He couldn’t, however, let the attacks keep him from purging this world from the Judge’s villainy.
Sabin dashed after the Judge and let the first few punches come off with a barely increased speed. The next few dozen, though, came off at a speed that made the attacks barely visable to the naked eye. His Raging Fist[/b] was that series of attacks aimed at maiming his foe through his armor. Gabranth would now feel the pure power of Sabin Rene Figaro, former prince of Figaro.
